1. KdenLive

KdenLive probably looks closest to Vegas Pro or Premiere Pro to some of the most basic free video editors.

It’s a feature-packed NLE (or non-linear video editor) with lots of built-in features – but not everything has been modernized.

Kdenlive supports any source format, multitrack editing, customizable user interface, keyframe effects, transitions, 2D Tytler, audio, and video scopes to help with colour and audio work and proxy-based editing!

It is available on Windows and Linux- and if you want to compile the code yourself, it should run on Mac OS.

2. OpenShot

OpenShot is more of an easy-to-use video editor, designed to work on the simplest project, but doesn’t overwhelm you with much user interface.

I found it very limiting to my complex editing needs. Still, I know that many users swear by the necessary video editing.

OpenShot supports unlimited tracks and edits, a variety of audio, video, and image formats, a variety of effects, keyframe animation, 3D animated titles, transitions, and speed changes.

OpenShot is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

3. Olive

It is Open Source and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Olive is still in very early Alpha – but it’s aiming at the big boys in the video editing space, at least UI-wise, looking quite similar to Premiere’s panel system, which isn’t a bad thing.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==

Olive supports multitrack editing, a growing list of effects, lots of exporting options, and is continuously updating.

I’ll keep an eye on it and recommend that those with less serious needs give it a go!

They seem to be actively integrating feedback and requests via GitHub, so now’s the time to shape the program.

4. Avid Media Composer

First, Now we’re getting into the big leagues.

Avid Media Composer is kind of the king of standard Hollywood-level digital NLEs for a very long time.

While Final Cut Pro X, Premiere Pro, and DaVinciResolve are rising for a few films and TV work, Avid is something you want to know in the professional field.

It used to cost tens of thousands of dollars to install Avid in a studio. They’ve started to devote themselves to affordable individual licenses and even a free version with Avid Media Composer First.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==

This comes with the full kit of professional tools for colour grading, stabilizing footage, adjust exposure, and so on.

It has multi-cam workflows, audio ducking stools, reframing capabilities, and a lot of audio tools.

This software, however, only runs on newer windows and Mac machines.

No Linux support, sadly.

5. BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve

BlackMagic Design decided to make the first professional foray into Linux video editing with their DaVinci Resolve editing software.

It is one of the best free video editing software for professionals.

Honestly, as in Avid, resolve’s feature set is too great for me to list here.

It has EVERYTHING.

Professional colour sorting tools that many users even if they do not edit.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==

It has built-in Fusion effects package for motion graphics and visual effects, a multitrack editor, transitions, speed effects, audio tools, multitrack timelines, crazy CUDA acceleration of graphics cards, Fairlight Audio suite, 2D and 3D title tools.

In previous versions, to get audio playback on Linux, you needed a BlackMagic hardware device in your system – but this seems to have been resolved (haha pun) in version 15.

DaVinci Resolve is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and has both free and paid versions – though most YouTubers, won’t need any of the paid features.

It will require a lot of tutorials watching to get going. Still, the results will be worth it.

6.ShotCut

ShotCut is quickly becoming one of my favourite video editors. I use it heavily on Linux because it’s very quick and responsive has a nice clean interface, and the rendering is much faster than kdenlive.

It is one of the best free video editing software for beginners.

It has excellent support, so you have excellent tutorials there are forums where you can ask questions and get answers. It’s under active development, so new features are being added all the time this is showing some of the different built-in transitions.

Transitions are effortless to apply in shot cut and very quick, and like I said, that one of the big selling points for me on shotcut is it’s just quick.

You can quickly bring in the footage, edit it, and get it out the door without having to, and you know to waste a lot of time on it.

It has different colour grading tools for adjusting colour they’re all keyframe as well.

Many of the filters are keyframe herbals, so you can dynamically change it throughout different parts of the video with a built-in filter for chroma key.

And it’s nice compared to some of the others we’re going to look at its functions well as a simple and advanced version.

you can do compositing and have multiple Clips interacting with each other as we do in this case so shot cut is a Video Editor worth looking.

7.Blender

blender-free-video-editor

Now Blender, you probably know of as a 3d modelling and 3d compositing animation software, but it also has a pretty solid video editing tool built into it.

So the software has been around for a long time, and it has all kinds of functionality.

I touched on it a couple of years ago, and I was getting into video editing with Blender.

I admit it’s not something that I use, it’s the one that of all these. It’s the one that I’ve used the least.

I do know, though, that it is really powerful. So you can have multiple tracks, of course, you can work with audio-video different compositing effects.

And so if you know the power of Blender, you know the different effects, and you can apply to this, and I imagine it is going to shine.

If you’re already designing like a 3d model in Blender that you want to work into a video project, I imagine it would work well in those applications.

You have to know a little bit more, and it’s sort of more like DaVinci Resolve.

In that, it’s very complicated; it has a high degree of customization, but it’s not going to be as intuitive.

It expects you to know more about frame rates and video codecs. You know layers and compositing and different things that you’re going to be doing.

It doesn’t just let you drag and drop, and everything works just easy-peasy something to consider, especially if you’re already a strong user of Blender.

8.Lightworks

This non-linear editing program has been used in many Hollywood productions, including The Wolf of Wall Street, Pulp Fiction, Mission Impossible, and many others.

LightWorks has a free and pro version; fortunately, the free edition includes most of the important features that most people would need, including video capture, professional-level colour correction, and import most file formats.

What prevents this program from moving up this list is that export formats are limited to MPEG-4 with a maximum resolution of 720p with the free addition of Lightworks.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==

This program is powerful and has a sharp learning curve.

If you want to try it, they have excellent video tutorials on their websites. Light tasks are available for Windows Linux and Mac.

9.Hitfilm Express

This powerful free editor is packed with features to create professional-quality projects. It includes over 400 effects and presets for advanced trimming tools, audio and video filters, output resolutions up to 4k, and more.

If you need additional tools, more than 30 other packages of $10 per package will be available.

When you start learning how to use Hitfilm Express, they have video tutorials that teach you how to use it.

The only problem I have with this program is the process of installing and running the first one.

First, you have to click get Hitfilm Express for free. You then have to choose a social media place to shout this program.

If you like most people, you probably think of shouting at a show you have never used before is ridiculous.

Fill in your details with a valid email address and select send me the Express download. You will then receive an email with a link to download the Hitfilm Express installer.

So click on it, which will take you to a new page to finally download the program, but hope there’s more.

After downloading and installing this program, the first time you start it, click on activate and unlock it, and now it’s done.

Apart from the heavy registration process, it is a great program.

Hitfilm Express is available for Windows and Mac.

It is more demanding than most free video editors. Make sure you meet or exceed the system requirements before installing it.

10.VSDC

Now, it’s one thing to know that this is only for the Windows operating system.

If you use Mac or Linux, it does not work for you.

I like this one because it does not need much power to work.

If you just click on the system requirements, you can see where the 256 megabyte is RAM or what AMD is or what the processors are, and you can see that XP works up to Windows 10 in this one.

So if you’re running Windows, this can be a great option. If you don’t have much power in your computer and yet it’s easy to recover after going through some tutorials and understanding how it’s set up, it can work fine.

There are many great features in this one. It is compatible with 4K and HD export with this, and then you have a few things like YouTube video stabilization tool for free!

This has a lot of things offered, and the other something I like for $19.99, you upgrade to the professional version, but I think the free does a lot of things you have to do.
